HISTORICAL SUMMARY OF ACTIONS
TAKEN BY THE SOUTH GERMAN MISSION FOUNDATION
AND THE GERMAN MISSION FOUNDATION
TAKEN FROM MINUTES OF THE FOUNDATION
(Compiled by Stephen G. Schwendiman)
Initial Board meeting of the South German Mission Foundation held at the law offices of Robert B. Sykes, 311 South State Street, Salt Lake City, Utah.
Board members attending, Larry Anderson, President, Richard Terry. 1st Vice President, Scott Anderson, 2nd Vice President, Robert B. Sykes, Secretary/Treasurer, Bruce Miller, Beverly Glover, Stephen G. Schwendiman.
“The Articles of Incorporation were briefly reviewed, explained and signed by [Robert B.] Sykes, [Stephen G.] Schwendiman and [Larry] Anderson.” [Emphasis added]
First “modern reunion” sponsored by the Foundation was planned
President Orville Gunther “is very pleased with the idea [for the foundation], but wants it known that it wasn’t his idea and that he’s not the impetus behind it. At this point, Robert Sykes and Larry Anderson explained that it was their idea to film President Gunther and that the suggestion of the SGMF came from them and not from President Gunther. It was also pointed out that President Gunther had virtually no role in any SGMF plans or activities, other than to suggest his general approval with the idea of promoting brother and sisterhood among former SGM missionaries.”
“Larry Anderson and Robert Sykes spent approximately 8 hours interviewing President Gunther about his life and the SGM, in order to preserve this record for his missionaries and his family.”
“It was reported and agreed by all present that President [Hartman] Rector was much beloved by the missionaries for his service to the SGM...It was agreed by all present that we should invite President Rector to be a part of all future reunions, if he would like the opportunity and to speak at them.”

Reviewed the recent history of the Foundation and how it obtained tax-fee status under I.R.C.
501(c)(3). David Lyon (‘67-69), and attorney, was very helpful.
The Foundation’s “original application was turned down because it focused on the social aspect, etc. We made it clear on a supplemental application that the Foundation would not officially be involved in social activities as an entity...The Foundation will focus only on fundraising and charitable items that are consistent with its newly-granted tax-free status.”
Jack Welch presented “ideas of charitable activities that could be accomplished by the SGMF...Jack pointed out that one of the great needs for German Saints is access to written materials and publications that Church members in America take for granted very little has been published in the
German language.
Jack suggested that “the book entitled ‘Latter-day Christianity - 10 Frequently Asked Questions,’ By Robert L. Millet and Noel B. Reynolds” would be a good one to translate and publish.
“Larry Anderson knows a former missionary who has a very large publishing company located in Utah County, who would certainly be competent to have this book printed. Apparently, he has a division in Germany.”
“Jack Welch and Larry Anderson were assigned to investigate the additional costs involved in taking the translated works and getting them printed in the German language. Larry will contact the missionary with the publishing company.”
Steve Tuft contributed significantly to the discussion on the necessity of maintaining two accounts.
Steve Schwendiman will develop an publish a newsletter containing a repot on Foundation activities and projects.
“Larry Anderson will work on developing a website for the Foundation.”
Board members attending: Steven Tuft, Paul Tinker, Larry Anderson, Stephen Schwendiman, Jack Welch, Robert Sykes, Larry Maloy.
Meeting held at the law offices of Robert B. Sykes, 311 South State Street, Salt Lake City, Utah
“Steve Schwendiman volunteered to call John Fetzer who was the mission president who preceded President Gunther to see if he has the addresses of any of the ‘lost’ missionaries that we are still looking for to make our list more complete. Paul Tinker will continue to work with Karla Stigelmeyer to find additional ones.”
“Larry Anderson agreed to host a website. He will design and maintain this website. Several possibilities were discussed. The one chosen by the Board was ‘ldsdeutschmissionaries.’”
“Larry Anderson will work on developing a logo for a letterhead.”
“If we are successful in raising the money we hope to raise, there will be many future projects that the Foundation can accomplish. Jack Welch will begin working on these projects and will make additional suggestions.”
“Larry Maloy will contact each board member to determine which 10 missionaries they will contact for fund-raising purposes.”
Board Members present: Steven Tuft, Larry Anderson, Larry Maloy, Kim Nelson, Robert Sykes, Jack Smith (by telephone), Richard Terry.
Meeting held at the law offices of Robert B. Sykes, 311 South State Street, Salt Lake City, Utah.
*
“The website is ‘ldsdeutchmissionaries.org.’ This will be the website for all that wish to assist in our fundraising and charitable projects. This is not limited to South German missionaries, but all German missionaries are encouraged to participate.”
Richard Terry reported that...we have about $2,500 and change in the account...We need at least $3,00 to start. Jack presented a couple of options...It was moved and seconded that we proceed with the translation and typesetting of the ‘10 Questions’ pamphlet, and have the Board guaranteed the amount.”
“Steve Tuft asked who would do the translating. Jack replied that the are several on hand to do this work, all of them German natives attending BYU or living in the area. All of them are quite competent.”
Board Members present: Steven Tuft, Larry Anderson (President), Larry Maloy, Kim Nelson, Robert Sykes (Secretary), Jack Welch, Richard Terry (Treasurer), Nevin Limburg, Alan Bradbury, Stephen Schwendiman, Scott Anderson (Vice-President), David Lyon.
Meeting held at the Utah Valley State College Institute of Religion preceding annual reunion. 785 West College Drive, Orem, Utah
“Beverly Glover was released from the Board of Trustees with a vote of thanks, and she had requested that her name be removed. Previously, her husband, Steve Glover, was appointed a member of the Board.”
“David Lyon, working with Steve Tuft, had graciously organized a new organization to run the
reunion. This required four members of the Board of Trustees. The following volunteered and were approved by the Board of Trustees: Richard Terry, David Lyon, Robert Sykes, and Steve Tuft.”
“Larry Anderson reported that the translation of the books in question has been turned over to an LDS German group in Germany instead of FARMS. Progress is being made. Jack Welch estimated that we will have the finished product in about six months...We anticipate that the books will also be printed in Germany.”
It was moved and seconded that we change the name of the organization (i.e., a dba), as far as the public is concerned, to ‘German Speaking Mission Foundation,’ or ‘GSMF.’ It was felt that if the name was changed, as moved by Kim Nelson, we would have much broader appeal, and could certainly expect to get far more by way of contributions...The official name of the organization, the ‘South German Mission Foundation’ will remain the same.”

The booklet “Latter-day Christianity” put out by FARMS was also offered for translation purposes.
Another suggestion was the book “True to the Faith” although the Church might translate it.

Larry Anderson will make an attempt to find a web-master since he already has the name reserved
Steven Glover indicated there are several German members in his ward who might be willing to do translation for the Foundation

Steven Glover indicated that through his ward members he would be able to locate Germans who could do translations at a minimal fee. They are ready to begin when the Foundation is ready
Larry Anderson indicated that he could find some webmaster but it was decided to see if a member of the Church could be located so that the person would be familiar with Church doctrine and issues.
Schwendiman indicated that Jack Welch said the booklet “True to the Faith” had already been translated into German so that was not an option
Jack Welch provided an email from Erwin Roth in Salzburg. Elder Roth is an Area Authority Seventy who has a translation and printing service and provided information regarding possibilities of items that could be translated. FARMS and BYU Studies were in negotiations with Roth.
Again the booklet “Latter-day Christianity” was discussed as a proper booklet to translate as long as approval was given by FARMS.

“Steven Glover reported that the booklet ‘Latter-day Christianity’ has been completed, the citations checked and it appears to be in very good form.
Steven Glover suggested that some funds from the Foundation be given to Brother Rahde for his efforts. Glover will contact Brother Rahde and make a recommendation as to the amount.

Jack Welch contacted Hans Kelling “who indicated that he will electronically give to the SGMF that which has already been translated on the Encyclopedia of Mormonism, but had not yet done it.
Once Jack receives the electronic section he will assess “what information or sections need to be done next to further our assignment. Jack said he would get a translation cost for this new material and would get with Kelling.”
When we have something on the site [we will] let Elder Uchtdorf know what we have done and allow him to access it.”

No progress had been made in learning what a name could be for the website so everyone agreed to continue searching for an appropriate name.
Board members indicated that they felt more information about what the Foundation was doing should be sent to former missionaries.
It was again agreed that the Peterson missionaries should be included because many of them had also served under President Gunther.
Due to the costs of mailing, the Board voted to reimburse Stephen Schwendiman for costs of printing and mailing.
Elder Bruce Hafen said he would help locate missionaries once a master list was provided.

Don Oldham had set up the website, placed the translated information from “Latter-day Christianity” on the website.
Larry Anderson noted that he had made arrangements with “Go-Daddy” to host the site. The Board voted to pay the feel of $8.00 a month for the site.
Jack Welch indicated that the material from the Encyclopedia of Mormonism that was already translated had “gone through several reviews and that it is appropriate to place directly on the website.”
It was agreed that the translation of the Encyclopedia “should move forward with caution and in a steady manner, but not going so fast that we outpace the money received in donations.”
Jack Welch reported that the translation services in Frankfurt could handle the translation but it would cost approximately “40 Euros per German page.” No commitment was made because of the cost.
Elder Hafen would help with translations and the Board authorized up to $5,000 to begin the effort.
The 30-40% of the Encyclopedia already translated would cost the Foundation nothing.
Scott Anderson and Steven Glover agreed to review what articles were remaining to be translated and would prioritize them.
Stephen Schwendiman reported that he had many respond to the newsletter and notice of the reunion. The “recurring theme was whether Elder Bednar would be there. In response to this inquiry, Schwendiman indicated that he personally sent an email invitation along with emailed copies of the newsletter.”

Brother Rahde’s translations were already on the website yet none of the Encyclopedia materials were yet on the site.
Larry Anderson and Jack Welch had not yet gone to lunch with Don Oldham to decide (1) process with Don, (2) determine what Don is willing to do, (3) guidelines on how the website will look once more material go on it, (4) search engines and how that will be handled.

Elder Hafen encouraged the Foundation to concentrate on translating articles and material as the best way to help the German Saints.
Jack Welch would send five articles that have been translated to the translators in the Church offices in Frankfurt for their review
An additional fundraising attempt should be made in order to provide funds for the translations.
Everyone thought it a great idea to see if Elder Bednar could speak at the reunion but it was thought that it might be easier to get Kim Clark, BYU-Idaho president to speak as he is one of our missionaries.

Further discussion was held with what the Foundation wants to do once the Encyclopedia of Mormonism is completed. Jack Welch will contact individual he knows in Germany to get input.
Based on President Uchtdorf’s suggestions the Foundation should do the following: (1) Look at the navigation terms, (2) Look at how the website is laid out, (3) have the current translators go to the website and make suggestions for improvements, (4) wait until everything is on the site to make changes.
Kelsey Lambert reported that the Foundation has 5 active translators. The are only 120 articles left to be assigned.
Translators are doing 25 articles a month and should be completed by the end of September.
Don Oldham wants a large group of articles at one time so she has not sent him any new ones for some time.
Hans Kelling does an initial review then sends them on to Kelsey Lambert. She must rename the file and get them ready to transmit to Don Oldham.
There are currently about 20-30 articles out for translation.
Larry Maloy reported that with so few articles left for translation, there should be sufficient funds for the completion of the project.
Kelsey Lambert indicated that she had notified the translators that the project was coming to a close.
It was agreed that the Foundation continue to pay per hour instead of article.
President Robert C. Oaks suggested that the Foundation consider doing articles about the Saints’s refugee/war stories. Kim Nelson suggested that the Foundation do that work.
Jack Welch indicated that there are 400-500 people in Germany on a subscription list for Church books that could be used to determine which ones to translate and publish.
Board members in attendance in person: Scott Anderson, Steven Glover, Kim Nelson, Jack Welch, Stephen Schwendiman.

Stephen Schwendiman had not yet written to Elder Erich Kopischke because he was waiting for the correct address to send him the letter.
Steven Glover reported that the Deseret Foundation does not have a specific category set up for someone to donate to the Foundation but individuals who wanted to could donate to our Foundation through it.
Jack Welch had written to August Schubert in Germany about what other projects could be entered into in translating once the Encyclopedia was completed but he had not yet heard back.
Former South German missionary, Ed Gholston had been appointed the Deputy Director/manage for the Orion space project for NASA.
Scott Anderson reported of a new approach to help get people into the mission field, headed by Elder Robert E. Wells. The Foundation considered whether it could help in this regard but it was decided that such a project was “beyond the scope of our mission at this point.”
The Board as a whole was committed to placing the stories of the LDS Saints in World War II on the website. This was encouraged by Elder Robert C. Oaks.
Authorization needed to be received by the Church in order to place them on our site.

His group has already released 100 titles of LDS books.
His organization offered to help the Foundation if we can determine how.
An offer was made to place all titles to the books on the Foundation website.
They desired to meet with the Board to determine what could be done.
Various aspects of August Schubert’s letter were explored and Jack was authorized to continue discussions with Schubert.
Kelsey Lambert reported that all of the final articles of the Encyclopedia have been assigned out.
Kelsey needs to communicate with Hans Kelling to determine where the articles are and what needs to be done yet in completing them.
It will only take a few weeks to complete the assigned ones.
Lore Schultheiss is “super fast” in her translating so she will get the articles done promptly.
Kelsey is in the process of formatting all of the articles before sending them on to Don Oldham for placement on the website.
It was the hope that all articles will be completed and sent to Don by April, 2010 so that at the reunion it can be announced that the project was completed.
The translators seem to be happy working on the project and she believes we can meet that April date.
It was not yet determined by the Board whether further translations would be done, but to let the translators know that such was a possibility.
Scott with check with Ed Wolferts about his efforts and there would not be any more assigned to him because of his efforts to complete what he has.
BYU still has not responded to the need for billings but Larry Maloy would contact them in order to bring everything up to date.
It was discussed how we could get others involved as it appears the Foundation is taking on much for the few of us who are on the board. No conclusion were reached.

Kelsey contacted Don Oldham to see if all articles from the Encyclopedia could be posted by April.
This will complete a wonderful project undertaken by the Foundation
Jack Welch tried to follow up with August Schubert after November’s meeting but has not yet heard back from him.
Kim Nelson suggested that we invite Elder Kopischke to have his reunion at the Jordan Institute at the same time we have our since he is coming from Europe for Conference. That invitation will be made.
Scott Anderson mentioned that there were miracles taking place in allowing us to work with the Church in Germany. Stephen Schwendiman will communicate with President Kopischke to offer the Jordan Institute for his reunion and then join all together for a meeting where he could address us.
It was unanimous that a separate website be created for the Encyclopedia once it is complete.
A discussion was held as to possible names for the various websites that the Foundation was contemplating.
Jack Welch indicated that recommendation from Samuel Koch, web designer and master for the Public Affairs group would be welcomed information to help the sites be better.
Don’s employee, Peter Warmbier in Germany would certainly know Koch and could work with him.
The question was raised if our website for the Encyclopedia of Mormonism could be linked to the official Church site in Germany.
The board was not aware of what it would take to link our site with the Official Church site, but felt that President Kopischke could help us through that issue.
There was some frustration expressed with the lack of response from the Area office in Frankfurt. Jack Welch indicated that he would contact people he knew to see what could be done.
A discussion was held regarding President Uchtdorf’s suggestion of “culturalization” of many of the articles. A review would be made.
Based on President Uchtdorf’s comments, everyone was agreed that Peter Warmbier should take a look at the translations and see that they are in conformity with the language use at the time.
Board members in attendance in person: Larry Maloy, Scott Anderson, Stephen Schwendiman; Board members in attendance by phone: Jack welch, Kim Nelson; Other attending by phone: Kelsey Lambert.

Anniversary of BYU Studies.
Elder L. Tom Perry’s efforts in Germany were discussed where he designated half of each meeting house as an Institute for Friday and Saturdays. Good opening for help with the Foundation.
Kelsey Lambert reported that she spent a lot of time catching up on the translators.
Lambert said she has spent a lot of time locating and rounding up articles from the Encyclopedia of Mormonism assigned over the past year and found that there are still 111 articles that she needed to track down.
Kelsey Lambert also reported that there were still 25 articles that had not yet been assigned to translators but they are now assigned and being worked on.
There are 19 articles she needs feedback on and will figure out where they are.
Hans Kelling has most of the articles and reported that he is getting so many he is overwhelmed.
Don Oldham told Lambert that if the articles were submitted by the end of January he could have them posted on the website by April’s missionary reunion.
Not all articles will be completed by January 31, but 95% of them would be done.
The articles would be highlighted at the reunion even if they are not fully completed.
Scott Anderson, on behalf of the Board, thanked Kelsey Lambert for her efforts and involvement. She responded by saying she found working on this project worthwhile and enjoyable.
As to the question of whether Hans Kelling like one translator more than another, Kelsey Lambert indicated that Kelling said he liked them all. Lore Shultheiss was one of the quicker translators.
Stephen Schwendiman indicated that he had not yet heard back from President Erich Kopischke about holding a joint reunion at the Jordan Institute.
Jack Welch heard back from August Schubert & Bruder Roth at the LDS Books group in Germany:
Roth was involved with information technology and was an area Seventy.
Roth served under President Hans Kelling
He would like to come to the reunion.
If President Kopischke cannot come to the reunion, perhaps Brother Roth could be the speaker.
Schubert and Roth did not have the books digitized in a format that can be placed on the website.
If the Board wanted to help digitize some of the books for placement, it would be thousands of dollars for which would be beyond what we could afford.
An Abby program could be used to digitize, but it would cost $.50 a page which is an additional cost that we could not afford.
Schubert and Roth are willing to look further into this and that their initial statements of partnering with us is sincere.
There are some copyright issues and we would need to check and see if the copyright holders would allow such a thing to be done. He is not sure whether Roth and Schubert have asked the publishers but that will need to be checked to see if we can put books on the web.
Kim Nelson suggested that we could create a program called “Sponsor-a-Book” whereas we ask missionaries or others to contribute $200-250 so that a book can be scanned and placed on the site.
A review of titles would be done to see what has been translated into German and whether they should be handled.
Board members in attendance in person: Larry Maloy, Scott Anderson, Stephen Schwendiman; Board members in attendance by phone: Kim Nelson and Jack Welch; Others in Attendance by phone: Kelsey Lambert.
The Board meeting was held at the Sandy Institute of Religion, 9501 South Poppy Lane, Sandy, Utah.
Jack Welch reported that he had communicated with August Schubert and Edwin Roth regarding digitization of books.
The Foundation cannot digitize books cheaper and could not afford to do so at the cost per page that was suggested.
It was believed by some that Roth and Schubert wanted the Board to pay for digitization so that they could make a profit on what was done. That was a concern.
Kelsey Lambert indicated that she was able to locate all of the articles and that every article except 3 had been translated. The last articles were being worked on.
The Board was thrilled that the Entire Encyclopedia of Mormonism has been translated.
Kelsey Lambert reported that after she cleans up the final articles she will forward them to Don Oldham for placement on the website.
Lambert wrote to all of the translators to inform them that the work was not only winding down but that they should not expect more.
Stephen Schwendiman indicated that President Kopischke has agreed to attend the reunion and hold his own missionary reunion and then join with us for a talk.
President Kopischke agreed to meet with the Board members before the reunion to discuss our Foundation business and introduce him to what we were doing and what we wanted to do with him.
All Translators and spouses are being invited to the reunion where announcement will be made of the completion of the Encyclopedia project.
No announcement would be made regarding working with August Schubert and Edwin Roth as the board was concerned with outstanding issues.
The Board changed the times of meeting to the 2nd Tuesday of every month at noon mountain time.
Board members attending in person: Scott Anderson, Steven Glover, Stephen Schwendiman; Board Members in attendance by phon: Kim Nelson, Steven Tuft, Jack Welch; Others in attendance by phone: Kelsey Lambert.

Don Oldham gave a summary report of web usage, the number of times people first requested the site, those how had been referred from other sources and other contacts.
The Board requested President Kopischke’s help in making sure the German people have access to what the Foundation was attempting to do.
President Kopischke was very receptive and presented material he had been given by Gabriele Sirtl, Europe area Director of Public Affairs.
President Kopischke suggested a separate stand alone web site for the Encyclopedia of Mormonism in German
The name hltwahrheit.org sounded somewhat sectarian and that other items could be on another site for the benefit fo German speaking saints.
President Kopischke was informed that the website was searchable.
The suggestion was made that the Encyclopedia be linked to the Austrian, Swiss and German Church websites.
Several volunteers are already looking at stories referred to by President Robert C. Oaks to se if they can be placed on a website.
A discussion was held about the “correct German Translations” in that President Kopischke agreed that ther were different usage of the language at various areas in Germany
Gabriele Sirtl will be the contact person at the Frankfurt office to deal with the Foundation matters.

Stephen Schwendiman addressed the group and thanked those who supported the Foundation and summarized the meeting with President Kopischke at the Church Office Building.
President Hans Kelling then spoke. He said he enjoyed his association with the Foundation and enjoyed the work of translation and indicated that of all of the things for the Church that he has done, his work on the Encyclopedia is one of his highlights of service.
Don Oldham then explained what he was doing and noted that he had already instituted some of the suggestions that President Kopischke made the day before.
President Kopischke spoke on consolidation of missions in Europe.
This was the first time that President Kopischke and President Kelling had been together since they served in the mission field.
President Kopischke indicated that he was disappointed when President Kelling took him into the office to work there and “learn English.” While he balked at that he was appreciative now because he led to his being called to serve as a Seventy which probably would not have happened had he not listened to his mission president and served in the mission office.
President Kopischke thanked the Foundation for it’s efforts in supporting the mission efforts in Europe and translating the Encyclopedia of Mormonism.
Board members in attendance in person: Scott Anderson, Larry Maloy, Stephen Schwendiman; Board members in attendance by phone: Kim Nelson
The Board meeting was held at the Sandy Institute of Religion, Southwest Bishop’s office, 9501South Poppy Lane,. Sandy, Utah.

This meeting would be Kelsey Lambert’s final meeting as the work was now coming to an end.
Board members were encouraged to suggest ideas of what to do as a special thank you for Kelsey Lambert’s efforts since the work would not have been where it is without her efforts.
Schwendiman reported that he had sent a thank you to Elder Kopischke but had not had any contact with Gabriele Sirtl at that time.
It was agreed that whatever Sister Sirtl agrees with is what President Kopischke would agree with.
A new name was discussed for the website for the Encyclopedia of Mormonism. Don had made it a stand alone website as suggested by President Kopischke
A further discussion was engaged in as to what to do with the remaining material that were on the website. No resolution was made.
Stephen Schwendiman would connect with Gabriele Sirtl regarding the issue of culturalization of the German Language and see what she suggests.
Kim Nelson questioned whether a Wiki style process be provided for changes to be made. That subject would need further discussion.
Scott Anderson suggested that Elder F. Enzio Busche who was then living in Alpine, Utah might be a possible speaker for the next yes. Elder Busche was President of the South German Mission in the mid 1980s.
The combination of two missions for the reunion was discussed and felt it worked out well.
Stephen Schwendiman reported on the brief conversation that Jack, Welch, Don Oldham, and Stephen Schwendiman had with Elder Bruce C. Hafen at the Church Office Complex. Elder Hafen expressed his gratitude for what the Foundation was doing and that he wished more groups would do the same.

Don Oldham had done a great job in getting everything placed on the website.
The Board discussed the ability of getting the Encyclopedia linked to the Church website in Europe.
August Schubert and Brother Roth’s group charges money each month to belong and the Board should be cautious about entering into some arrangement with them.
Stephen Schwendiman reported that he was not aware of anything more that Kelsey Lambert had in her possession with everything supposedly completed but that he would follow through with her.
Until Gabriele Sirtl responds from the Area offices, there was little the Board should do in determining what the next projects could be.
Scott Anderson again indicated that the MoreGood Foundation wanted to partner with the Foundation but it was not clear what that relationship would be. It needed to be clarified.
A meeting would be set up with the MoreGood Foundation Executive Board to discuss mutual concerns and how we could help each other. Scott Anderson will help set up joint meeting.
Since Roth/Schubert were doing a lot of translating, the suggestion was made that the Foundation do more than getting involved with hard copy and concentrate on internet items.

Don Oldham forwarded on to Sirtl the official name of the Encyclopedia
Sirtl informed Don Oldham and Stephen Schwendiman that the Encyclopedia website was officially linked to the official Church websites in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
The Foundation’s contact with the Area offices was now with Ralph Gruenke
Sirtl and Gruenke want the Foundation to prepare an article to be placed in the German issue of the Liahona. Jack Welch will work with Hans Kelling to make sure it is correct.
Jack will sift through material and give a summary of the creation of the Encyclopedia’s translation and placement on the web.
No time frame has been given for the preparation of the Liahona article but should be done in the next six weeks.
Sirtl has looked at the Encyclopedia and found some misspellings which need to be corrected.
The suggestion was made that an email type account be linked to the Encyclopedia so that people could respond to the material.
The extent of the review of material could be substantial. Sirtl recommended that GermanFairLDS group be contacted to see if they could be of help.
Axzel Gomann was suggested as someone to help review and also coming up with a better name.
Don Oldham was to come up with information as to the number of views and hits the website was getting.
Scott Anderson reported that he contacted representatives of the MoreGood Foundation who would like to meet with the Board at the Board’s convenience.
It was suggested that the Board meet with the MoreGood Foundation personnel at the Board’s next scheduled meeting on September 14, 2010 in Provo.
Jack Welch could schedule a room at the Law School or we could meet at the MoreGood Foundation offices in Orem.

A discussion was held as to editing the Encyclopedia of Mormonism as well as determining what next to do.
Jonathan Johnson thanked the Board for its introduction and the efforts that it made to get things into German.
Jonathan Johnson indicated that the MoreGood Foundation wanted to expand its efforts into Europe in a better way.
Johnson made a power point showing how over the prior year the vast majority of information on the internet had been anti-church and now it was turning to be more positive in what was happening.
The MGF is currently working with the Missionary Committee to determine what to do and how to do it to improve the nature of the Church.
The MGF wanted to access the Encyclopedia put on line by the SGMF in order to help improve positive nature of the work.
The influence of the Church is based on taking “small” things and making a difference
Jack Welch suggested that the MGF give to the SGMF alist of key terms that the MGF are looking for as far as tracing access to internet searches.
Karen Trifiletti wanted to cooperate with the SGMF to increase activity and outreach in Germany.
Board members indicated that the SGMF was in agreement to cooperate with the MGF to increase activity and scope of what will take place in Germany.
The Foundation also agreed to utilize extra articles to answer general questions on the various websites to help further the goals of the organizations.
The MGF desired the SGMF to help in creating organic sites that would then link to the more detailed sites. Such would optimize the sites that would be on a particular subject.
The SGMF was requested to help create a separate site where we can establish German stories and testimonials of common members of the church who would be willing to share their testimonies.
Jonathan Johnson reported that he has access to the 300+ stories of members of the Church in Germany during World War II and could place them on the internet.
The MGF was reminded that the SGMF did not have the staff or the money to do many things discussed because of the nature of our volunteers.
The MGF indicated that if the SGMF could contribute some money to the MGF that it would make quite an impact on what the MGF can do in furthering the increase of positive information on the internet.
There was no clear decision made as to what the South German Mission Foundation would do as the Board needed to discuss it further after this meeting was over.
Don Oldham’s report of access to the SGMF sites was provided to the MGF staff so it could be seen what we were already doing.
Board Members who attended board meeting in person: Scott Anderson, Larry Maloy, Stephen Schwendiman; Board Members in attendance by phone: Kim Nelson; Others in attendance by phone: Don Oldham
The Board meeting was held at the Sandy Institute of Religion, 9501 South Poppy Lane, Southwest Bishop’s office.

A discussion was held regarding the hiring of editors and doing further work on the Encyclopedia.
Don Oldham brought up from his years of publishing that there are differences in the talents of people Some are good writers and some are good translators and others are good editors.
Don indicated that Germany has gone through a double language change and that editing can be a very difficult and interesting process. We shouldn’t worry so much about that aspect.
